Ice Pancakes
These strange formations look like floating pancakes but they are made from ice. The dinner plate sized ice pancakes are believed to be formed be eddies in the river. Foam gets trapped in the swirling eddies and eventually freezes into these ice discs. Collisions between the plates form the raised rims. Read more about it on the River Dee blog here.

Giant Ice Balls
These ice balls were photographed in Lake Michigan. My guess is they were formed by chunks of melting snow from the bank. The chunks were shaped into balls by the tide.

Rotating Ice Saucer
This odd rotating ice circle was recorded last year in Bismark, ND by George Loegering. The 55 foot in diameter circle spins rapidly in its fixed position. The National Weather Service believed the saucer was created by an eddy in the river, in much of the same way as the ice pancakes above.
