Sykes Study: DNA Matches Modern Polar Bear Not Himalayan Bear

Last year the Sykes study looked for DNA evidence of a Yeti. It failed to find the Yeti but claimed to discover something interesting – DNA evidence of ancient species of Polar Bear. You can see my original blog entry here. Recently new analysis of the study determined that this conclusion was in error. The samples actually match modern Polar Bears. It gets a bit more complicated than that and you can read the details on Loren Coleman’s Blog. However the mystery doesn’t end there. The samples of modern Polar Bear DNA were collected in the Himalayas, a region which has no known Polar Bear population. Perhaps there are Polar Bears in the region after all and they account for Yeti sightings in the region. If that were true it would be an interesting case where exploring the possibility of a cryptid lead to real discovery.
